Recovery Time After LASIK Surgery?

April 15, 2024

Glasses or contacts can interfere with your daily activities in many ways. If you prefer an option that lets you spend less time worrying about corrective lenses, it may be time to consider LASIK. This vision correction procedure uses a computer-guided laser to help you see more clearly. While many people worry about needing a long time to recover after LASIK, there is much less downtime than you think.

What is LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?

LASIK laser eye surgery is a procedure that uses a laser to change the shape of your corneas. The corneas form the clear front part of your eyes, and they bend light on the way through. Changing the shape of the cornea causes light to focus on the retina, leading to a clear image without the need for glasses or contacts. LASIK is used to treat refractive errors, including farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. It is the most widely performed type of laser eye surgery.

How Does LASIK Work?

During your LASIK procedure, Dr. Wu uses a laser to create a flap in the top surface of your cornea. This flap remains attached but can be lifted aside to expose the cornea tissue beneath (stroma). Another laser is used to remove a microscopically thin precise amount of tissue without damaging the surrounding tissues to match your eye prescription. After the reshaping, Dr. Wu gently puts the flap back into place, where the edges will quickly begin to heal. Your eyes are numbed throughout treatment to prevent any discomfort.  The procedure takes 10-15 minutes.

Recovery Time After LASIK

For many people, one of the biggest advantages of LASIK is the rapid visual recovery time of 1 day. When you leave your procedure, you will have eye drops prescribed that you should use exactly as instructed. You may experience light sensitivity, irritation, and blurry vision for a few hours after surgery. Most people can return to work within two days, although there may be some limitations if your work involves dusty environments.

In order to protect your eyes from infection while they heal, you should avoid water sports, saunas, eye make up and exposing your eyes to dusty environments for up to one week.  You will receive full instructions from your team, and following these will help you have a fast, complication-free recovery.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

Laser eye surgery is a fast and effective way to achieve clear vision with minimal recovery time. LASIK is the most well-known of these procedures, but is not always right for everyone. Good candidates for LASIK should meet these criteria:

  • Older than 18 years of age
  • A stable glasses or contact prescription for one year
  • Healthy corneas with no abnormalities
  • A prescription within the range LASIK can treat
  • No participation in contact sports
  • No problems with frequent dry eyes

The only way to find out if you are a good candidate for LASIK is to schedule a consultation with our surgeon. Even if you are not eligible for LASIK, we offer other types of laser vision correction, such as SMILE and PRK. We also offer the advanced EVO Visian ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) for patients with thin or abnormal corneas. These options are suitable for people who cannot have LASIK for a variety of reasons.

Dr. Wu helped me get Lasik and now my vision is great! No more contacts or glasses. I had dry eye afterwards but that was expected; followed instructions and now all is good. Thank you!
