Does LASIK cause dry eyes? What Science Says

Laser vision correction has helped millions of people reduce or eliminate their need for glasses and contact lenses. However, one of the most common concerns among those considering LASIK is whether it causes dry eyes. If you’re thinking about LASIK, it’s essential to understand how the procedure works, its potential effects on tear production, and what options are available for those prone to dry eye syndrome.

How does LASIK laser eye surgery work?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a highly advanced procedure that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The process creates a flap in the surface of the cornea, which is then lifted so a laser can reshape the underlying tissue. Once the laser treatment is complete, the flap is repositioned, allowing for quick healing and minimal discomfort.

The precision of LASIK makes it one of the most popular vision correction procedures, with most patients experiencing significant improvements in their vision within a day or two. However, because the surgery affects the corneal nerves, it can temporarily impact the eye’s ability to stay lubricated.

Does LASIK cause dry eyes? What Science Says

Dry eyes are a known side effect of LASIK, particularly in the first few weeks to months after surgery. This occurs because the laser disrupts some of the corneal nerves that regulate tear production. When these nerves are affected, it may take several months for them to regenerate for correct tear production again.

Studies have shown that many patients experience some amount of dry eye symptoms post-LASIK, but these effects are typically temporary. Research indicates that tear function usually improves over time as the nerves regenerate. Some people, particularly those with pre-existing dry eye conditions, may have prolonged symptoms.

To minimize eye discomfort, Dr. Wu often recommends eye drops and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments before LASIK surgery. Proper preoperative evaluation can also help identify individuals who may be at a higher risk for prolonged dry eye symptoms.

What is the best LASIK alternative for people with dry eyes?

For individuals with chronic dry eye syndrome or those concerned about post-surgical dryness, there are alternative vision correction procedures that may be better suited to their needs:

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction): This procedure uses a laser to create a small disc of tissue within the cornea, which is then removed through a tiny incision. Because SMILE does not involve creating a flap, it has a lower risk of causing dry eyes compared to LASIK.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): Instead of creating a flap, PRK removes the outer layer of the cornea, which then regenerates. PRK has a slightly longer recovery time than LASIK but may be a better option for those prone to dry eyes.

EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): Unlike LASIK or PRK, EVO ICL does not alter the cornea. Instead, it involves implanting a biocompatible lens inside the eye to correct vision, making it an excellent choice for people with dry eyes.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is a safe and effective procedure for many individuals, but not everyone is an ideal candidate. You may be a good candidate for LASIK if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have stable vision for at least one year
  • Have healthy corneas with sufficient thickness
  • Do not have significant dry eye syndrome
  • Have no underlying eye conditions, such as keratoconus or severe allergies
  • Are not pregnant or nursing

A thorough evaluation with Dr. Wu can help determine if LASIK or an alternative procedure is the best option for you. If dry eyes are a concern, Dr. Wu is a cornea specialist who can recommend treatments to improve tear function before surgery or suggest an alternative vision correction procedure that better suits your dry eye condition.
