Vision Correction Options in Your 20s
Several factors are considered when planning vision correction for someone in this age group. First, it is important to make sure your eye prescription has been stable for at least 12 months before proceeding with vision correction. Second, it is crucial to identify eye conditions, such as keratoconus, thin corneas and dry eye that may exclude LASIK as an option. LASIK, however, is not your only option for vision correction. Did you know that there are five different procedures that get people out of glasses and contacts with minimal recovery time for those with busy lifestyles?
Best Vision Correction Treatments for People in Their 20s
The best form of vision correction for you is a personalized decision between you and your surgeon after an in-depth consultation. Options that may be discussed include:
LASIK
This popular form of laser eye surgery reshapes your corneas using a laser, correcting the focal point of light entering the eye. During LASIK, a flap in the cornea surface is created. LASIK treats astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness, although not all prescriptions.
One of the biggest advantages of LASIK is its ability to treat a wide range of people with a variety of prescriptions. After LASIK, most people are back to their normal activities within two days. LASIK may not be suitable for people who have dry eyes or participate in martial arts.
SMILE
Sometimes referred to as LASIK 2.0, SMILE is an advanced type of laser eye surgery that corrects astigmatism and nearsightedness (the most common vision problem in people in their 20s). SMILE is minimally invasive because the laser creates a precise disk of tissue in the cornea that is removed through a tiny incision.
SMILE’s biggest advantage is its ability to treat people who cannot have LASIK, due to dry eyes or contact sports. While it treats the most common types of refractive error that those in their 20s have, it does not treat farsightedness.

EVO Visian ICL
While many people assume that laser eye surgery is the only option for vision correction, an innovative procedure called the EVO ICL (intraocular lens) provides another choice. This lens is placed into the space behind the colored part of the eye (iris) and over your natural lens.
The advantages of EVO ICL are that it is reversible if your prescription changes, leaves y our cornea intact and you can see immediately after the procedure. In addition, you cannot see or feel the lens. EVO ICL can treat stronger (higher) prescriptions than LASIK, although it does not treat farsightedness.
PRK
This is the original LASIK. PRK utilizes a laser to reshape the cornea without the creation of a flap. Patients with high astigmatism and thin corneas are suitable candidates for PRK. This procedure is less popular due to the longer recovery period.
Am I a good candidate for vision correction treatments?
Most people in their 20s with healthy eyes can have some form of vision correction. While these are four of the most popular options, we have other procedures that can work for people who cannot benefit from them. Good candidates have a stable prescription within the range these procedures can correct and have realistic expectations about their improvements.
