Am I a good candidate for LASIK? Key Factors to Consider

LASIK is one of the most widely performed vision correction procedures, offering freedom from glasses and contact lenses. However, several factors determine who makes an ideal candidate for LASIK. Understanding these key factors can help determine whether LASIK is recommended for you.

How does LASIK work for vision correction?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) corrects vision by shaping the cornea to improve how light is focused onto the retina. A laser creates a flap in the top portion of the cornea, which is lifted to allow another laser to reshape the underlying cornea tissue. The flap is then carefully repositioned, allowing for a quick recovery and improved vision within a day or two.

LASIK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, providing long-term vision correction in a wide range of patients. Many people achieve 20/20 vision or better after the procedure, reducing or eliminating their reliance on corrective lenses.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK? Key Factors to Consider

While many people enjoy excellent long lasting results after LASIK, not everyone will see their best results with this type of vision correction. Individuals with high prescriptions, certain eye conditions, or other factors may benefit from other treatment options.

Can LASIK treat your prescription?

LASIK is typically effective for individuals with mild to moderate nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. If your prescription is extremely high, LASIK may not remove enough corneal tissue to fully correct your vision. In these cases, an implantable lens like EVO ICL may be a better option, as it does not involve removing corneal tissue or corneal reshaping.

Do you have any medical conditions?

Certain medical conditions can impact healing and increase the risk of complications after LASIK. Autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and conditions that affect wound healing may make LASIK less ideal. Additionally, if you take medications that affect the immune system or healing process, your doctor may advise against LASIK. Discussing your key medical history with your eye care specialist is essential to ensure a safe and successful procedure.

Are your eyes healthy enough for LASIK?

Your eyes should be free of infections, chronic dry eye, or corneal diseases like keratoconus. Conditions such as severe dry eye syndrome may worsen after LASIK, as the procedure can temporarily reduce tear production. People with dry eye may be better candidates for SMILE laser eye surgery. Your doctor will evaluate your eye health and may recommend treatments to improve your tear film before considering LASIK. Additionally, sufficient corneal thickness is necessary for LASIK.

Are you over the age of 50?

As you age, your vision naturally changes, and conditions like presbyopia can make it harder to focus on nearby objects. LASIK can address presbyopia, which usually begins affecting people in their late 40s. If you need reading glasses or have difficulty with close-up tasks, LASIK alone may not fully meet your vision needs. For individuals seeking a permanent solution that will not develop cataracts, intraocular lens implants (IOL) may offer a more comprehensive solution for both near, intermediate and distance vision.

Do you have other risk factors?

Your lifestyle, occupation, and personal preferences should be considered. If you have thin corneas, frequently participate in contact sports, or have a high-risk profession, LASIK may not be the best choice. If you have a history of keloid scarring or poor wound healing, your doctor will assess whether you are at a higher risk for complications.
